Opening weekend brought mixed results to my boat. I fished 4 different lakes over the weekend. On one lake we didn't get a bite. On two others we caught a mix of smallmouth, largemouth, and crappies but no walleyes. On the fourth lake we hit a limit of nice walleyes with the largest being 25" which is shown in the attached photo. Persistance pays off. We caught our walleyes on 1/8 ounce jigs tipped with large fathead minnows. We crawled them slowly along gravel bars in the 12' to 20' depth range. Couldn't find any weed related walleyes on any of the lakes we tried.
Although it was beautiful weather I would have to rate this as one of the poorer openers we have had in awhile. The extremely cold Spring we had I'm sure was mostly to blame. The warm forecast for this upcoming week should help tremendously. I look for the walleyes to finish up their spawn and head to the weeds soon. Crappies are staging for the spawn and are just waiting for some warm weather to get them active.
