Which brings up a great question, where IS Jim Hemmy? My brother and I used him as a guide a bunch of years back, and really enjoyed his company. Even though, back then, he did prefer the smallies. Never could locate him afterwards.Quote:

Scott you're right. He did move to Green Bay and was handling the fishing tackle dept. for Gander Mountain there. He was also doing some guiding on Green Bay. Wanted my brother and I to come over and fish with him, but we never seemed to get our schedules to coincide. Over the last couple of years we've lost touch with him, ie. emails went unanswered, so I have no idea where he is now.
I'm getting stoked for our Summer trip.
The flowage goes back to my grandfather in our Chicago family. My grandfather would fish with Popko, my Dad grew up down the street from Joe Shamet in Cicero and we'd spend our Summer vacation at Shamet's.
After my Dad died a few years ago (his ashes are near Sandy Island) we started an every other year reunion at Fort Flambeau. My sisters drive up with their kids from Chicago, my whole family flies in from Seattle.
The flowage is a little slice of heaven. I can hardly wait for June.

With the web being lo-res, I really did a double-take. Up close, could be the head of Nessie or a stump with antennae.
My guess, probably incorrect, is the left side of the bay right across from Tiny & Fluffy's.

This rock bar (Joe's Bar) was name after Joe Golomb, an old time fishing guide.
With all the rain coming this weekend, it should break up the ice by next week. The ice went out on the Chippewa Flowage early this week. We usually have ice out the following week.
The Chippewa was speared for the first time on Tuesday (04/14/09) evening.

Is the same guide as the Indian named "Joe"? Many of the spots we fish today came from the Indian guide Joe who took out my father and uncles in the 1950's. He worked most of the resorts but was a favorite at Al's Place (later Fort Flambeau).
Joe used several different names for fishing areas that were different than termonology used today. The only one I can think of that is still called by the same name is Pump Island.
The area you show on the map would indicate that it is a strong possibility of being the same guide because the Indian guide Joe, liked the South end. He also liked the Beaver Flats area Log Jams which of course are gone now and this spot is right on the way. He called the Beaver Flats log jams (Northern Pines). They came out about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the shore line. Joe loved throwing June Bug spinners into those logs for walleyes (gold blade) or northerns (red/white blade) or silver blade on sunny days.
I have the feeling you either know this from experience or have at least heard about the old methods. Anyway I was curious if this is the same "Joe" or if there were two Joes guiding the flowage back then?

Paul, Joe is the same character your referring to. He also had two sons that guided on the flowage. In fact one of his son's lives at the Fort Flambeau area. He is a very nice guy to talk to.
Connor, don't know what you are calling Grassy Island, because it is located just south of the Big Island, between the dam and Springstead. If it's the location you are saying the pictures is, then you didn't get it.
Gus, is correct also, it just north of the power lines and Donners Bay (in front of the house).
The ice is breaking up out front, there are big cracks and the bays are showing signs of water.

It's what Mini-me calls Slidie Island, because he enjoys sliding down the steep bank. The location is across from Long Island, camp site C-14.

Good job Gus, the rock in the picture is just off the edge of the river channel. Its hard to make out, there are four otters swimming off that rock. I've seen many boaters go right over the top of that rock....Yikes!

The last shot was taken from the south end of the Big Water facing north. So the sand banks by the dam would be in the back ground.
Island in the picture, is called Tony's Island. Tony is a local and guided on the Flowage for many years. Tony is married to Ovr Donner's (Ovr built Donners Bay Resort) daughter. Both very nice people, they sure can tell you about the history of the Flowage.

Thanks for the complement, just wanted to get us through until opener. Then there should be all sorts of new stuff to talk about.
We'll be putting in the docks and lift/boat tomorrow or during the weekend. Always look forward to that chore, its nice to look out the windows and see open water.
The DNR has been putting out fluke nets in the area.

Thank you for all the photo postings over the winter, I consider myself lucky to have guessed correctly on one of them. My brothers and I will be up for our long-awaited week starting May 9th, so please save a couple of walleyes for us, OK?
