I spent time chasing perch saturday off Butler's Island with meager results. Most of the perch were small, and we got just a handful of keepers. Wigglers on tiny chartreuse jigs were best.

The shoreline was beat-up in some spots, but fine in others. We saw several ATV's going out, and the ice was still two feet or more on the weed flats east of the island. We walked out, pulling a sled and a shanty.

The camera showed small pike roaming in every spot we tried, and I suppose that kept the action down. Several hit our rigs and broke off. We had one truly awesome perch sighting in fourteen feet though. While watching the screen we observed one fish coming straight toward the lens and commented that it was a walleye. It turned however and we saw the unmistakable stripes of a perch on its sides. What a fish! Remember the older "wide-track Pontiacs"? Well, this one was certainly a wide body.

Another interesting sight was that we occasionally snagged dead weeds from bottom, but some of them had small (one inch) sprouts of bright green growth.
