Jim,
I hope you don't mind me posting this here. I think people need to be made aware of the on-going problem we face every winter in our area.

This is why spearing shouldn't be allowed on our BROOD lake. This is a very common problem and we have caught fish that have survived encounters like this.

Very sad and definately a problem that needs to be stopped.

Click on the following link to view the fish:

Contact our DNR Office and tell them that this needs to stop:

Bemidji Area Fisheries Office
2114 Bemidji Avenue
Bemidji, MN 56601
218-308-2339
bemidji.fisheries@dnr.state.mn.us

Please take one minute out of your day and give them a call or send a quick e-mail to our local office and tell them that spearing on Musky Brood Lakes needs to cease.

There are some folks out there who really need help. There are professionals who may be able to help them in the mental health department. To kill a fish just for the thrill is unbelievable. Or did they think it was a big pike, either way they made a big mistake and should pay for their actions. I have never speared, I personally would rather catch a fish on hook and line. I have been in a spear house and it really is a thrill to watch fish come into view. With that said I do not want to start an anti spear thread. I do believe that spearing should not be allowed on lakes that contain muskies. I can remember years ago when Muskies Inc. members went to a meeting in Northern Minnesota, the meeting was set up by the DNR to consider banning spearing in some lakes. A shouting match ensued and resulted in a physical confrontation. Kevin, thank you for the update. Give the DNR a call and voice your opinion.

MN Waterfowler is a screwed up site- I registered and then tried to login- no luck- tried to contact- no luck- tried to get a new password so I could get on- no luck. Tried to go through the Kellar Outdoors site- hit contact- that wouldn't work . They have some pretty uninformed people on there who think that muskies eat up all their game fish. And did the author of that thread say those guys in the picture were friends? Shouldn't he know who they are? Made it sound like they were hoping to identify them. (?)

DJ, the guys in the picture weren't the ones that speared it, they just found it. So tracking down the actual spearer I'm sure will be next to impossible unless you get the culprit to come forward, which is obviously doubtful.
