Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/16 to 8/23 2014

This week was absolutely beautiful weather wise with temps 68-74F and the fishing some of our guests experienced was terrific.

Tony Zupkas from Wichita Falls, TX & Ken Koresch from Downers Grove, IL returned for their 2nd time. 1st day they went out looking for toothy critters finding some Northern Pike & each landed a Tiger Muskie. 2nd day was a great day catching many good size Northern Pike while in search for that trophy Muskie.

3rd day they fished Cedarbough, & said it was fun learning new waters. 4th day had them catching Northern Pike, had some great big Muskie follows, with a few hitting their lures but neither could qualify a catch. 5th day was a portage for Muskie & did they ever see fish following their lures, almost hooking up a few times & they did catch some big Smallmouth Bass with Tony landing a monster 19” Trophy. 6th & final day they had fun catching nice size Pike searching for the Trophy Muskie. Both left having a fabulous time & hope to return.

Paul Schumacher & Mike Nash from Lakewood & Baileys Harbor, WI were here for their 1st time. On DOA they caught fish within minutes of being on the water, Mike catching a 17.5” Smallmouth & some chunky Pike. 1st day had them catching a lot of Northern Pike & their magic bait was a Rattl’n Rap. 2nd day was full of firsts. Mike had his 1st Muskie follow, caught his 1st Pike over 30”, & caught his 1st ever Muskie, a nice 31”er.

Also, they both saw a Moose swimming across the lake, also a 1st. 3rd day was a “GREAT” day catching over 20 Smallmouth Bass up to 18.5”, & over 20 Pike up to 33”. 4th & final day was excellent with them catching fewer fish but all were bigger including Mike landing a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass & Paul caught a big 37” Muskie. Both left saying they had a terrific time & would love to return.

Mike, Susan, & Andy Pritzl from Caledonia & Racine, WI were back for their annual family trip. In just a few hours on their DOA Andy & Mike caught 5 Pike. 1st day these two had a great day with Mike catching a 35.5” Muskie & Andy catching his biggest fish ever landing a huge 40” Tiger Muskie.

2nd day was terrific catching 61 Northern Pike & 4 BIG Smallmouth Bass 17 to 18.25” with Andy catching the trophy Smallie. 3rd & final day they caught a number of Smallmouth bass & 14 Northern Pike each catching a 32-33”er. All left enjoying their time & said they will be back.

Long time Fireside Lodge guest Herb Kleinwachter returned with friend Tom Warner for his 1st visit, both from Warrenville, IL. 1st day they searched for Muskie in Cedarbough Lake having follows, & Herb lost a dandy but caught a HUGE 39” Pike. Tom caught 2 big Northern Pike up to 37”. They also caught 9-average Pike after supper. 2nd day was all about Musky again having a lot of action in follows, some very large, & a few hook ups but because of short strikes the fish only took the back hook & got off. 3rd day they went for numbers & the caught a bunch ending up with 76 Northern Pike between 26-34” & Herb caught 2-20” Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

4th day had them searching for BIG Muskie & Pike finding many, but could only get follows. 5th day was a fabulous day catching 45 fish mostly Northern Pike, a few Smallmouth Bass, & Tom lost a 45”+ Muskie at the boat when it jumped about 5 feet from the boat scaring the BEGEBEES out of him & Herb. 6th & final day was a fantastic finish catching exactly 100 Northern Pike deciding to call it a trip at that number. Both left having a Fabulous time & hope to return next year.

Paul Letourneau, son Michael, & Spencer Olson from North Oaks MN & Metairie, LA returned to chase BIG toothy critters. 1st day they accomplished their goals as Michael caught a 38.5” & a 42” Trophy Northern Pike, plus an 18.5” Trophy Smallmouth Bass, & Spencer landed a 40” Trophy Pike. Second day had them fishing in a lot of spots catching a few Pike in ever one, which added up to many caught between 25 to 32”, & Michael again came up with the biggest fish of the day being a 37” Northern Pike. Paul also lost a Big Pike in the 40” range.

3rd day was their traditional yearly portage to Booger Lake catching 125 Northern Pike in 5 hours, having 3 triples catches and numerous doubles. Then they fished Little Vermilion Lake for 2 hours catching 10 Pike 28-30”. 4th day they did well catching over 20 Pike 26-32”. 5th day brought lot of Pike up to 36”, despite the windy conditions, by trolling on the windy side of the lake. 6th & final day was spent searching Muskie & two were caught, a 27” by Spencer & a big 37” by Paul. Upon departure Paul said we will see you next year.

Long time consecutive year guest, since 2000 Walt LaCasse from Minnetonka, MN returned with his Grandson Keagen for his 6th time at the age of 12. DOA in just a few hours they caught 11 Pike & 4 Smallmouth Bass with Keagan catching all but 1.

1st day was great when the Pike turned on mid-day & they kept catching bigger fish as the day progressed. Keagan caught a 35.5” Pike & Walt a 36”er. Walt also caught a trophy Smallmouth Bass & a 31” Muskie, 2nd day was a portage for Muskie & after getting some follows & no hook ups the came back to Little Vermilion Lake & landed 6-7 nice Pike before supper plus several after supper including a 35.5”er.

3rd & final day had them catching well over 20 Northern Pike 28-34”, a Muskie & several Smallmouth Bass. Keagan & his Grandpa left making some wonderful memories & secured their dates for 2015 so they can continue their annual tradition together.

Doug & Frank Kerr from Henrico, NC & Plainfield, IN returned for their 4th consecutive year. 1st day the morning was slow by when the sun came out the fishing picked up as they caught Smallmouth between 15-17.5”. 2nd day they caught 25 Smallmouth Bass wacky wormn'. 3rd day they were on fire as they caught over 35 Northern Pike & 9 Smallmouth Bass, with Frank catching a HUGE 20” Trophy Smallmouth. 4th day had them having their best Pike day ever catching 48. 5th & final day was another great day Pike fishing as they caught 30. Both left having a wonderful time, making a few new friends, Herb & Tom above, & most important making memories between cousins.

Returning were long time consecutive year guests since 2002 Tom Nayder & sister Lea Bezin from Orland Park, & Berwyn, IL with friend David Sivicek from Pierceton, IN. for his 3rd visit. DOA Leah set the big fish bar by catching a 38” Northern Pike before supper. 1st day Dave caught the big fish of the day (thanks for spreading it around Leah) landing a huge 18” Trophy Smallmouth Bass.

2nd day had them catching 20 Northern Pike 28-32” & 12 Smallmouth Bass. 3rd day the caught 27 Pike in the 28-32” range with Dave landing 14, & Leah lost a fish of a lifetime as her line just broke while fighting the monster. Many of us know that feeling. Their final 2 days had them catching over 20 fish per day & having a ball doing so. All had lots of laughs making many memories & hope to return in 2015.

Long Time Guests Steve & Debra Johnson from Halltown, MO were back to catch Smallmouth Bass. 1st day they had 10 Smallmouth Bass & 2 Pike, one being a large 35.5”er. 2nd day was really good as they caught 23 Smallmouth Bass with 4 being 17-17.5” plus a Trophy 18.5’er. Debra also caught a nice Muskie. 3rd day they caught only 1-2 fish per spot but by staying on the move they landed 25+ Smallmouth Bass including 6-16-17”, 3-17-17.5”, & 2 trophies at 18 & 18.5”. 4th day was about 15 Smallies but all big & Debra caught a Trophy 18.5” Smallmoth Bass. Their final two days were very windy making the Smallmouth fishing a challenge however each day they caught Smallmouth Bass 16 to 18” & Steve caught what he called a “Big Toad” being a huge trophy 19.5” Smallmouth Bass. Both said they had a great time & Steve said they will give us a holler next year.

Hot Lures: Rattl’n Rap, Blue Fox Spinner, Sinking Worm, Booby Trap, Rizzo Whiz, Bull Dog, Tube Jig

Catches of The Week: 40” Tiger Musky, 42” 40” Northern Pike, 2-20”, 2-19.5” Smallmouth Bass and many 18-19”, 125 Northern Pike in 5 Hours
