As the water temps continue to drop, the muskies are starting to feed more aggressively. Much of August was a tough bite in the sense that many strikes were not very aggressive and lots of follows were the norm, resulting in a lot of beak-hooked and lost fish. Action was good in terms of sitings and strikes/hookups but the hookup to catch ratio was far lower in my boat than in July when water temps were seasonally appropriate. September has shown some promise and fish are starting to pack on the lbs for fall. Look for most musky action to be shallow/heavy cover related until turnover period is upon us. A deep bit is still present in some lakes, however, many fish have taken up residence in the shallows since water temps are in their comfort zone and many species of baitfish (aside from ciscoes/whitefish) can be found in the greatest abundance in the weeds. Some crib and rock bites have been good at times, but the weeds are simply holding more fish; its a numbers game. No real surprises on bait selection for this time of year. Topwater and bucktail bite has been sporadically hot with good weather/moon conditions. Jerkbaits, wood and rubber have been best in tough post frontal conditions.
