Alright well this seems like the most active of the Canada forums so I figured is ask here. I'm headed to fox lake up near kenora, Ontario and I was wondering if you guys think I'm gonna have open water to fish when I head up May 22-June 1? We have a private camp and don't really have anyone to contact up there to ask. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are on a smaller lake, and not LOTWs. Things have changed here over the last few days, and we are seeing spots open in the current areas, and along the ice road banks. Kenora is uaually a week or so behind us. I'm no expert on Fox Lake, but my SWAG would be that you are ok.

There are several websites that can give you an idea of what the ground conditions are in the area although not necessarily Fox Lake. The first is a satellite that passes over every day. When it's cloudy you can see much. Web address is http://ge.ssec.wisc.edu/modis-today/ Put the cursor in the upper right corner of the screen and click. Then check the 250m box. Move the bar on the right down about an inch and you will see LOW and all the surrounding lakes. Kenora is on the northern shore of the lake and looking at the satellite view you should be able to get an idea of the ice conditions. i.e. Black is water and white is snow and ice.

There is also a web camera at http://www.gokenora.com/webcam.shtml. This shows portions of Kenora's LOW shoreline. If you go there today you will see quite a bit of open water. Do't get to excited because there has been some open water up there for sometime. I suspect the open water is the result of currents and perhaps inflows from the city of Kenora. Of course the rest of the Area is frozen sold.

Ah Timmy me boyo. Reminds me of Arthur Treachers. I really miss that place.

Had to run to town today, and grabbed these pictures on the way home a few minutes ago.

Standing on the ice road at Mergen's Point looking toward shore, and away from shore.

The big hole is toward shore, between the ice road, and the snowmobile trail. If you were on the trail.....oops. Looking close, you can see the subsurface rock.

The one that seems far away, is about 25 feet off the road. Looks further in the picture. You can see that rock above the ice.

So in past years I have always gone to our camp at Fox lake in late june and early july. That being said I may be a little out of my element with this whole late ice out and cooler conditions. Since I'll be heading up there the last week of May does anyone have any input on the best tactics for smallies and walleye in these conditions? I will being using some live bait for walleye but I prefer not to if I can find another way. I can hold my own fishing, but any ideas on what you guys think the fish will be doing at that point would be appreciated. Thanks

Locked and loaded. Took advantage of the 14 degree temperature this morning to put the boat down on the lake. I don't see needing it for two weeks, but the ground was rock hard this morning, and I could do it without the truck cutting ruts.

At first, seeing the two pictures side by side, I thought it was a pair of swim fins. One for the left foot, one for the right. I thought to myself, "Oh what is he up to now".

Thankfully I opened the pictures and was greatly relieved to see that things are still normal at Bay Store.

Here in Amery, I am not getting a darn thing done. Hopefully,with the blasted dip in the jet stream flattening out, and 70's predicted for this weekend, I will get going on preparing for next week's turkey hunt and spool up for the fishing season once the ice goes off the lakes.

There is still snow on the ground from the blast we had earlier this week, but at least we are still making ice on the lakes.

Below freezing evenings the next few days won't help but rain/wind should.
