After years of frustration of dealing with frozen braided dacron fishing line that retains water and then lies loosely on the spool after it thaws, I decided to try an experiment. I have been changing over my tip up backing to Cajun red 20 lb. test mono line and have been pleasantly surprised. Here is what I have found:

The line lays on the tip up spool well after it has been on there for a bit. Initially it uncoils without tension but it will stretch and conform to the spool.

It does not absorb water so it doesn't freeze to your spools or to the ice when you bring a fish in.

It is red so you can see it on ice or snow.

It has decent abrasion resistance.

It has a bit more stretch than dacron. You have a a bit more shock absorption since you don't have a rod to flex and take some of the shock. I admit this is a minor positive.

Best of all. It is cheap. 1$ / 100 yds.

What do you think?
