Fishing Report by Steve Suman

“The close of muskie season in the Northern Zone November 30 basically brought the 2012 open-water fishing season to an end,” says DNR fisheries biologist Skip Sommerfeldt.
“A few of walleye anglers continue to try their luck on local rivers below the dams, but generally with low success and most anglers are waiting for solid ice to get back into fishing mode.
“With that said, nearly all lakes in the area have developed a thin layer of ice, but at this point, NO lakes have safe ice cover. There is about an inch of ice along shoreline areas, but the three to four inches needed for first-ice anglers to venture out is still a week or more away on most waters.
“We need several nights of calm weather with cold temperatures in the low teens or single digits to get to ‘walk-able’ ice depths, but the mild temperatures this week will slow the formation of solid ice cover.”
