Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 8/4 to 8/11 2012 Part 2

This week’s weather was as near perfect as any week could get. Daytime temperatures were in the 70’s and lows in the low 50’s. Rain, which we need to maintain water levels, was very scarce. With the sun setting earlier every day along with the cool nights & early mornings you could feel that the fall season is just around the corner.

Returning for their 12th consecutive year we father/son Tom & Mark Reese from Bartlett, TN & Alexandria, VA. First day they did not set the world on fire just catching a few Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, but Tom said it perfectly “ We had a blast as father & son enjoying fishing, the wilderness, and catching up on life”.
Well-said Tom. 2nd day had them catch some Smallmouth Bass and a few Pike with a few bite offs. They were using a drop shot technique which was a new method to them. I suggested it for Smallmouth Bass as they were on a very light bite. However the Pike were not, as they attacked it and broke them off instantly.

3rd day they did ok catching about 8 Smallmouth Bass. They however saved the best for their 4th & final day. After location discussion the plan was catching Smallmouth Bass on the drop shot rig with night crawlers. They had success at the first spot and stayed there for 3 hours. I guess the fishing was good there. The caught Smallmouth after Smallmouth with Tom landing 2 Master Anglers Award Smallies both measuring 18.25” and Mark got a HUGE 19” Trophy. Great finish to another memorable father & son trip at Fireside Lodge and they have all good intentions of returning in 2013.

Long time guest Leon Robbins from Yadkinville, NC returned with his son Andy from Cary, Justine Sebastian from Mt Holly for their 4th trip & Leon’s nephew Troy Reed from Winston Salem or his 2nd time. 1st day was fabulous as they caught 34 Northern Pike, 2 Muskie and several Smallmouth Bass, with Leon having the hot hand catching a 17.5” Smallmouth Bass and a 38 “ Musky. All had great fun and they had plenty of stories in the dinning room at suppertime. 2nd day was very good for Leon again as he caught a 28” Muskie and a 17.5” very large Smallie fly-fishing on a fly he tied. While fishing with Leon, Andy hooked and lost a huge Muskie breaking Andy’s line. 3rd day had Andy & Troy fishing for Muskie for most of the day, both losing a big fish, and caught 1 small musky. They also caught some Smallmouth Bass. Leon & Justine had a fast action day catching 35+ Northern Pike & three Smallmouth Bass. 4th day was a slower day catching a few Smallmouth & Northern Pike. 5th & final day started very early fishing before breakfast catching some nice Smallies & a nice Pike. The rest of the day was full of action on Smallmouth Bass & & Northern Pike with Troy lading another Muskie for the trip, which made 7 for the group in 5 days of fishing. All left saying they had a GREAT time and hope to return in 2013.

Father & son Mike & Zack Gerulski from Huntington Woods, MI returned for their 11th consecutive year. 1st day before supper they landed 13 fish, 2 being Pike and 11 Smallies. There is always a friendly competition among these two, and today Zack seemed to come out on top. 2nd day was very good as they caught 22 Smallmouth Bass & several Pike with Mike landing a big boy at 36”. The Smallmouth really seemed to turn on after supper catching many bigger Smallies & having a lot of other action, which did not result in catches.

3rd day they stared with an early morning pre-breakfast fish, which had Mike catching 5 and Zack doing a heck of a job netting Mikes fish. Zack said he could have caught more fish in his sleep. The rest of the day they caught about 8 Smallies before supper & after they had lots of action catching 8 more Smallies and several Northern Pike. 4th day was portaging for Smallmouth Bass. They had a great day catching quality fish, landing big Smallmouth Bass, Mike catching a Master Anglers Award 18.5” Trophy & he also caught a 28” Musky. They also experienced having multiple Musky follows at the same time. Several times they had 2-4 Musky following their lure at the same time. That evening they also caught some nice Smallies after supper. 5th & final day started early fishing before breakfast and Mike caught a nice Northern Pike & both caught several Smallmouth Bass. The rest of the day was spotty however but after supper they had very fast action catching 12 Smallmouth Bass, several Pike and missing some fish. Both left having another very fun fishing trip full of father & son memories.

Father & son Al & David Wortz from Howards Grove, WI were thrilled to be back fishing at Fireside Lodge. Al told me their main focus was on having David catch a Muskie. First day the opportunity bell rang as they had several follows, Al had a Muskie blow up on a Top Raider, and David had a big Musky attack his Bull Dog at boat-side. When David went to set the hook, he pulled it out of the fish’s mouth as it only grabbed the tail end of the Bull Dog. Afterward the Musky still chased the lure again but made a quick exit. Very exciting & slightly disappointing at the same time. David however did catch 10 Northern Pike with most being on the Bull Dog.

2nd day was great as they caught 15 Northern Pike and 1 Musky. After supper they decided to fish for Musky so Al asked David if he wanted to use they only Bull Dog they had left. He decided to us a Mepps Spinner. Well, after AL landed a nice 32” Muskie using the Bull Dog, David realized he made the wrong choice for that evenings fishing. 3rd day had a very exciting beginning as Al hooked a nice 28” Pike on the Bull Dog (what else) and after netting & releasing Al’s fish David hooked into another 31” Northern Pike with the Bull Dog & Al had to net it before he was able to get his Bull Dog out of the net. Fast & furious action is an understatement. 4th & final day was terrific fishing for large Smallmouth Bass. Going out with the intent to catch Big Smallmouth they did just that landing 20 very large Smallies. Great day of fishing & another memorable fishing trip between Al & David. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make you special father & son memories.
