Ive been coming up to fish the wisconsin river this time of year for years now. I just checked the regulations did they change for next season? I thought the river was fishable for any species year round. The new 2012- 2013 regs say basically panfish only like all other bodies of water. Can someone clarify the regs for me. I usually fish the river east of 4th st in Tomahawk. I'd hate to make the 4 hour trek and not be able to fish for any pike. Thanks in advance.

Been trying to clarify this myself. We are about the same distance to Tomahawk also.

Boys:

Per the other thread that supra is looking at, about three years ago the lake associations lobbied and were able to get the game fish seasons closed as they felt too many peeps were coming up/over and taking too many fish home during their vulnerable spawning time. I think once you get south/downstream of Pride Dam (Holds back Mohawkskin), you are able to fish for game fish per the WI River regs.

This is verbatim from the regulations in Lincoln county on 36:

Wisconsin River waters:
> Grandfather Flowage (Wisconsin River including sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream to the first dam or highway bridge) upstream from Grandfather Dam, which impounds
Grandfather Flowage, to Grandmother Dam:  Motor trolling is permitted.
> Grandmother Flowage (Wisconsin River including sloughs, bayous, and flowages
upstream to the first dam or highway bridge) upstream from Grandmother Dam, which
impounds Grandmother Flowage, to Pride Dam, which impounds Lake Mohawksin: 
Motor trolling is permitted. Please note: The boundary of the Wisconsin and Spirit rivers
is the confluence of the Spirit River one mile south of the Spirit River Flowage Dam.
> Lake Alice (Wisconsin River including sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream to the
first dam or highway bridge) upstream from Kings Dam, which impounds Lake Alice, to
CTH A): Motor trolling is permitted. The open season for largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, northern pike, walleye, sauger, and their hybrids is from May 5 through March 3.
> Lake Mohawksin (Wisconsin River including sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream
to the first dam, highway bridge, or railroad bridge) upstream from Pride Dam, which
impounds Lake Mohawksin, to the Fourth Street Bridge (Business 51) in Tomahawk: 
Motor trolling is not permitted. Please note: The boundary of the Wisconsin and Somo rivers is the Tomahawk Railway Railroad Bridge on the west side of Lake Mohawksin. The boundary of the Wisconsin and Tomahawk rivers is the Canadian National Railroad Bridge nearest Baymill Road.
> Wisconsin River (including sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream to the first dam
or highway bridge) upstream from the Fourth Street Bridge (Business 51) in Tomahawk
to Kings Dam, which impounds Lake Alice: Motor trolling is permitted. The open season
for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, sauger, and their hybrids is
from May 5 through March 3.
> Wisconsin River (including sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream to the first dam or
highway bridge) upstream from CTH A: The open season for largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, northern pike, walleye, sauger, and their hybrids is from May 5 through March 3.
> Wisconsin River (including impoundments, sloughs, bayous, and flowages upstream
to the first dam or highway bridge) from Grandfather Dam downstream to the Marathon
County line (includes Alexander Lake and Merrill Flowage):  Motor trolling is permitted. The minimum length limit on walleye, sauger, and their hybrids is 15" but fish from
20" to 28" may not be kept, and only one fish 28" and larger is allowed.

Lake Mohawksin Walleye fishing is open all year, you can not fish gamefish past the Somo trestle or you can not fish for anything past the Jersey trestle (closed until the first Saturday in May) You can fish and troll from the 4th street bridge up to Kings Dam where the size limit is 15 inches and you can keep 5. Lake Mohawksin the size limit is 15 inches and you can keep 3. Talked to the D.N.R. to verify this, the regulation book has the explanation wrong for this part of the Wis River system.

Always felt like they were good on the geography, but not the fish law in this explanation, thanks for the help Dave!!!

Thanks Dave for clarifying. We are coming up next weekend to ice fish one last time. Think there will be any ice in the bays?
