Feb 6, 2012 Fishing Report

Hi Folks. Well it’s mid-winter here in northern Wisconsin and ice fishing has been gaining steam right along. We had some weird weather to get the season going, and it’s been pretty mild up here overall, so ice conditions aren’t quite as good as you’d like them. There are variations in the ice and driving on them with vehicles is not recommended. Be sure to check before heading out and doing this. The warm temperatures this week have put a lot of slush on the top. The guys that are out there, though, are having some success.

Northern Pike have been doing very well throughout the area. Fish are being found around weeds in 6 to 10 feet of water and taking golden shiners on a tip up. Guys using jigging rapalas have also been having success. Walleyes are also being found in these areas with the same types of bait and lures. This bite takes place mainly in the late afternoon-early evening hours.

Bluegills have been leading the way for panfish with anglers reporting good success on these tasty treats. Jigs tipped with wax worms and spikes have been the ticket – fished around the weeds. The larger fish are coming from the deepest weeds found. This warm weather that has created all that water lying on top of the ice is also starting to trigger the crappies. Anglers are beginning to find them suspended just below the ice and over the tops of weeds. Jigs tipped with small minnows or a piece of pork rind have been working well on these fish.

That’s it for now. Stay warm and dry and have good success fishing.
