Ice cleats are a definite necessity for the time being. Pressure cracks are allowing the 2" surface snow cover to get saturated and glaze over making for extremely slick conditions. As of last night, still measuring 3" in most "virgin" areas, 4" where we traveled over the last 3 days, even after 2 nights of -0* temps. A neighbor spent Sat. over in Indian Bay and managed 3 northern, 1 - 21" 'eye and 3 keeper pannies. He said most guys weren't staying long as the bite was slow. He saw a couple ATV's moving around but it is still too early for SAFE motorized travel.
5"-6" is the usual minimum for sleds/ATV's. We managed 6 northerns, 3 eyes 15-18" and a couple nice perch here around north shore. Still finding lots of coontail weed scattered about here, but am surprised how much dead weeds we were pulling up. Will take a while to find the good green stuff. Hoping we get cold before any more snow accumulates. Will report when conditions change.
