Fishing over the weekend was excellent and we had some amazing weather to kick off another season here in the north woods with temps reaching into the low 60’s by late afternoon. Sunny conditions warmed the water surface temps from 45 degrees in the morning on the Eagle River Chain up to 58 degrees in some areas. On Friday conditions were overcast and the wind was blowing out of the NW with gusts up to 20 mph and on Saturday and Sunday the wind was coming more out of the E-SE at 5-10 mph.

No fancy presentations were needed to get things rollin’ this year. Working the edges and fan casting flats in areas with new weed growth using a 1/16th oz jig tipped with a medium-large size fathead minnow worked very well. We had good action from walleye, northern pike, perch, and smallmouth bass utilizing this technique. Most of the fish we caught were shallow in depths of 3 to 7 feet of water. The northern pike and perch were active all day and the walleye bite was best during the later afternoon into the evening. Fishing the north and east sections of the lakes with the warmer water temps is critical for finding the more active fish.

Hopefully we will continue to have a slow and gradual warming trend as we transition from spring into early summer. I have a feeling things are going to be hot this year for all species!

Good luck and fish hard!
