sorry about getting behind on reports last few weeks,also got a zillion big fish pics to get up and posted and will get it done asap.
water temps 62-64 and steadily/slowly dropping now looks like fall is here. extended forcast is for 60's daytime,40's-50's nite for next couple weeks. if this continues we look forward to an awesome regular fall bite coming up.
walleyes on the reef bite are still steady and slowly dropping deeper as the thermocline drops which is around 35' now. most consistant bite has been 28-35 but don't be afraid to go deeper even past 40' on high pressure,post fronts,or flat sunny days and don't forget to try shallower on darker or real windy days. key is the transition areas off fingers of bars ,deep flats off bars and the hard bottom areas at those depths.mark fish,fish them till they scatter then find another group,once bite slows move as the fish are moving around alot.
lindy rigs,jigs and big chubs key.
suspended bite all but gone. there is a pm edge bite going on with jigs off the edge of flats at 15-18' with deep water close by and a sporatic grass/weed bite going on at 12-16' but mostly on darker windy days or pms.
lots of eater year classes from 15-18" with good numbers of slot and over fish 19-25" with some 26-30" mixed in here and there.
some big pike 38-42" being caught by walleye fishermen deep but also shallow by musky fishermen as water temps are cooling off more and more are showing up.right now if i wanted to target and catch some big pike i'd use a heavy floro leadered 1/2-3/4oz lindy rig with 5-8" suckers and fish them off walleye humps at 35-45' deep.we boated 6 in our group yesterday fishing walleyes (yes i took one for the team and fished walleyes for the first time since 1st of aug but had a great time) from 36-42" along with walleyes to 28" and a 50"+ musky that grabbed a walleye at 35' but got off after taking danny and the guys in his boat out to 50'.boated around 90 walleyes between the 2 boats.
bass are now moving up onto the humps at 16-22' with big chubs and jigs,tubes and drop shots with 4" worms working best very good avg size 16-20" and super fat,most but not all of the good walleye humps will have some on top and shallower than the walleyes.they will be bunching up more and more daily/weekly now.surpisingly there are also some bass in bays and along shorelines also but scattered.ron barefield is in as guest instructor this week,he is an awesome bass fishermen as well as all species and he reported catching some nice fish at 9-12' in bays with scattered weeds and rock on seikos as well as on the humps.
lake trout are on a tremendous pre spawn bite jigging in 60-90' along rock walls and also trolling at 60-70' over 70-110'. it has been common to boat 30-50 or more per day last 2 weeks along with alot of whitefish mixed in.
muskys are still using both weeds and rocks but i would say with the dropping water temps,some beds breaking down,fronts we have had go through it has been more 70-30 rocks over weeds. the more days in a row sun is out the better weeds have been and vice versa. mostly big blades when fish are on and moving hard and smaller blades,raiders,rubber,gramas after fronts and tougher days.
had 3 50's with 3-4X that many lost and a bunch of 42-49's last week i know of at least 10-12 last week alone lost at the boat or on/off as 90% are coming at the boat. this has been going on for several weeks now,lots of nippers when it comes to the big fish,with the cooling water we hope the trend will change and they'll become gobblers.we're so close to breaking wide open on some really big fish it's maddening.
make sure you got your hooks razor sharp,stingers on any baits that allow it,set your drag not to tight or thumb at boatside,make sure all your terminal tackle is not notch,and be super conscious of big wide turns and boatside manuervers at all times,it really is the total diff right now.
it looks like we will miss the mid sept heat wave we've experienced the last couple seasons and with the forcasts and steadily dropping water temps we should have the first normal fall in awhile and we're really looking forward to a great fall trophy season.
we still got a few openings from sept 11 through oct 16-23 so if you haven't made a trip yet or are getting the 2nd trip itch'n nows the time to get it done.give us a call for availablity,options,pricing,talk fishing etc.
our duck and goose hunts start wed and are full through oct 7th with one opening after for 2-4. danny has been scouting,building blinds and says it will be a slaughterfest.
been seeing some big bucks last couple weeks,got 1-2 spots we could fit a hunter into.
