Team catches 5 muskies in 1 day at Big Chip tourney

Pro Musky Tournament Trail (PMTT) competition teams visited the Chippewa Flowage last Saturday and Sunday for the third of four series-qualifying events this year. The weather was hot on Saturday and cool and windy on Sunday.
Highlights of the catch-and-release event included:
• Twenty-eight muskies caught and released. • The first place team of Scott Donovan and Chris Riebe caught and released five muskies, all on Sunday, the first time that’s ever happened during a PMTT event. Fishing ended at 1 p.m. that day.
The pair’s fish measured 36, 39 1/4, 43 1/4, 43 1/2 and 45 inches, all caught on black/green and orange-and-black striped Lungin’ Tails.
“We found really cold water, 66 degrees,” said Donovan. “The fish were stacked up from 3 to 6 feet in a small spot with little ledges.”
• The Stone Lake area duo of Scott Kieper and Guy Mittlestadt took second place, landing a 39 1/2-incher and 43 1/4-incher on Bulldawg baits Saturday. The 43 1/4 incher was the biggest fish caught Saturday by tourney participants.
Kieper and Mittlestadt said they haven’t fished the Big Chip that much. “I spend my time where I can see 14 feet down in the water,” said Kieper.
“We were throwing heavy rubber in deep water structure and just pounding away,” Mittlestadt said. In contrast to Saturday, they didn’t see any muskies on Sunday.
• Another local team, Tanner Wildes and Tom Olson, took third place with a 34-incher and 45 1/4-incher taken on Cowgirl baits. “We were throwing Cowgirls in the weeds,” Wildes said. The bigger fish was caught while Olson was doing a figure 8 at boatside on Sunday.
The biggest fish of the weekend, a 47 1/4-incher, was taken at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in wind-blown weedy shallows on a Maffia spinner by Del Colvin and Jeff Kozlowski from the Chicago area. They placed fifth in the tourney.
Awards for the Big Chip event were presented to the top 15 teams at the Flat Creek Inn ball room. In addition to those listed above, the winners were:
4th, 40-incher and 37 3/4 incher taken on Depth Raiders, Jeff and Joe Anderson; 6th, 43-incher on an orange tail Bulldawg, Austin Vig and Andrew Mast; 7th, 42 3/4-incher on a Medussa, Brian Clepper and Chuck Smida ; 8th, 42 1/2 incher taken on a Suicidal Sucker, Tom Ustaszewski and John Michalec; 9th, 40 1/4 incher taken on a Medussa, Ben Olsen and Andy Hamm; 10th, 40-incher taken on a Super Shad, Jerome Morris and Eric Bergguist; 11th, 39 3/4-incher, bucktail, Jim Stoll and Ty Sennett; 12th, 39-incher taken on a Medussa, Jason Sommers and Troy Milnourie; 13th, 39-incher, Bulldawg, Mark Lijewski and Clay Schroeder; 14th, 39-incher, Crane bait, Bill Ramsey and Shamus Handley; 15th, 38 1/2 incher taken on a J Mac jig, Ross Korpela and John Adkins.
The Hayward area host sponsor of the PMTT event on the Chippewa Flowage was Flat Creek Inn & Suites.
congrats to local guide Tanner Wildes on his third place finnish. He proved his musky fishing prowess.
