Josh,

Look for current breaks, whether created by shoreline irregularities, rocks, sand, or wood - these areas will hold the most smallmouth bass. Both crankbaits and plastics are fine options in August - I do well on Rattl'n Raps, twitching Floating Rapala's, and also swimming a 3" or 4" orange, yellow, or chartreuse Mister Twister grub on a jighead. As for the buzzbaits, I would probably start with the 3/8 oz. model.
