Fishing in the Eagle River and Three Lakes area over the last week has been phenomenal. The warm weather we have had, with air temps reaching into the 70’s consistently, has pushed the water surface temps into the 60 to even 70 degree range on certain lakes. Green weeds are coming in thick and the fish have been very active with the stable weather pattern.

I was out guiding yesterday for the day and the overcast conditions combined with a steady SE breeze at 10 mph to make from some great fishing. We had action from almost every species throwing small crankbaits such as a Rapala. A jig and minnow combo was also very effective, either fished right through the gaps in the cabbage beds or just off the weed edge. We found very aggressive walleye relating to shallow weeds in the 5-10 foot range and they were attacking almost everything with ferocity. Moving off the structure into deeper holes also put a few in the boat.

Northern pike action was “easy” as throwing anything over the tops of the weeds produced good action, including a nice 30 incher. Muskies are beginning to hit artificial lures as we also had hook-ups with two good fish but with the small tackle it was hard to keep them hooked. Remember, our muskie season does not start until Saturday, May 29th. Perch were found in the weeds as well in depths of 3 to 10 feet with a 1/16th oz jig and minnow producing the best.

The weather is predicted to get even hotter into next week which should really get things moving! We should have a great muskie opener and the walleye and pike fishing should remain consistent for a while.

Good luck and fish hard!
