February Evening Trips

The walleye action for me seems to be picking up through out the first weeks of February. The fish are getting more active with the longer days and warmer temps we have had. Some nights we have iced 6 to 10 pike before dark and 1 to 5 walleyes through the night.

Most of my success has been on sand bars adjacent to deep water, fishing 7 to 10FOW with green cabbage weeds. Small mepps treble hooks size 10 and 12 tipped with small lake shiners or fat heads are my bait of choice. As the month moves on, I will go back to a bigger hook and bait because the fish will become more active as the season ends.

Walleyes that I have been catching are ranging from 17.5" to 22" mostly all males. I am throwing back as many as possible to ensure the future for the walleye population in this lake.

Pike have been ranging 12" to 25", iced 1 last night that went 31.5" but with the brutal wind and weather last night, I release it as soon as possible so the fish was not harmed, therefore was not able to get a picture of the pike.

P.S. Figure "8" Musky Club Derby this Saturday February 13th come out and enjoy the great derby that they put on. Derby headquarters are held at the County Park!! Visit www.figure8muskieclub.com for more information!!

Good luck to all and please consider Catch and Release if possible.
