Bucktail blade paint

My brother wants to create his own blade colors, and when he tries conventional spray paint, it runs. What kind of spray paint do you use for painting blades and is there a coating that you need to apply afterwards to make the paint/pattern hold?

Not sure. The times when I have painted bucktail blades I just used thin coats so as not to get any runs. They never turned out that pretty but we caught fish so who cares.
