It seems no matter how much we warn anglers about ice conditions, there is still a few that have to push the limit the ice is ready to handle in the way of weight.
These past days I have heard of a pick-up truck going thru the ice on Iron Lake in the U.P. in 12 feet. The two anglers got out, the dog did not.
A man walking fell thru on North Twin, and so did a snowmobile. Two four wheelers fell thru on Big Sand Lake in Phelps. Luckily no one has drown.
Safety is the key with all the snow insulating pockets on the lakes.
On the positive side, some of the lakes are safe to fish, primarily the smaller ones. However, snowmobiles, trucks, and four wheelers should stay off them yet.
The good news the walleyes are fairly active in the late afternoon and into the darkness. Medium Shiners, some sucker minnows, on tip ups and jigging spoons seem to be getting the action. Three to seven feet seems to be the key. Heard of a nice Largemouth Bass being caught on a small lake at 12 feet yesterday.
Northerns are popping some flags during the high sky part of the day. They are hitting large shiners on tip-ups for the best action. They too are shallow in weeds around three to seven feet.
There are not many panfish anglers going out. Only sold 4 containers of waxies all weekend. Occasional nice size perch have been hitting anglers jigging spoons that are fishing for walleye. The spoon has been tipped with crappie minnow. Some of the best jigging spoons that have been working are Gapen's Flickers in 1/32 and 1/16 size tipped with a waxie or small crappie minnow. The minnows on a Flicker have also been catching walleyes.
There hasn't been any crappie action reported as of yet.
