I would guess this is true. There's lots of ice fisherman out 40 to 50 miles south. And with this cold weather and no snow on the lakes, it's making ice fast! One of the lakes near me went from open water on Friday to half a dozen houses out on Tuesday. A little too risky for me. But it shows that it's making ice in a hurry.
