The week in weather was a bit more stable than we've been getting used to, but the warm temps that we need to pick up the water temperature still haven't been there.
Walleyes were found mainly on the humps, with some nice ones being caught jigging with minnows. You can still pick up a few on shorelines and points, but most boats have been focusing on reefs & humps to get the majority of their fish.
Big northerns were pretty active last week for those casting for muskies. Many northerns in the 38-41 inch range were caught and released on muskie lures during the week.
There were some nice muskies caught and nicer one's scene, hooked and lost as well. One boat was able to raise a couple in the mid 50 inch class (see July trip reports for a detailed account of that trip) as well as catch a couple in the 47-48.5 range as well. A 50.5" fish was landed out of the weeds on a spinner bait, which was then followed by another 50 inch class fish missing that same spinner bait on the very next cast after the release. That would have been a heck of a day of fishing!!
A local guide fished with one of our groups this past week and made the trip to Whitefish Bay twice during their trip. The first day was pretty decent with 50+ northerns being caught. The second trip over the portage was even better with 82 northerns caught. They released 79 of those fish, keeping just a few to eat. The 3 guests really enjoyed all the action up there and seeing things happen in that clear water. I definitely have to get myself up there someday. The same group fished walleyes one day and had a great shorelunch and a good day of jigging.
The portage system is working fine as long as someone guides the cable on so that it doesn't get misaligned while cranking the boat over. It's almost a 3 person job now instead of two. With someone guiding the cable, there were no problems getting up, over and back with the cart.
Still hearing some big perch being caught as well as some nice crappies. No huge quantities of either species, but a few here and there.
