I went out wading and casting for smallmouth on the Escanaba River in the Cornell area for an hour today, and caught 3 from 12 to 15 inches. I wondered if they would still be in places where I caught them all summer and fall, and they were. The action was slow compared to when the river was warmer however. Since the water is up about a foot from earlier, I was able to use a floating Rapala without snagging so much. I guess the bass must stay in shallower water until freezing conditions force them into deeper spots.
