I read an article last summer about it. They (DNR & Wisc Power) changed the timing of the drawdown from a January start to a February start. I forget the exact days, but then the refill will still happen as usual in April.
Their thinking is that by delaying the drawdown one month it won't freeze the lakebed as much or as long and it might give the weedbeds a better chance of re-establishing themselves. They want the weedbeds to improve because they say that the weedbeds help to filter out the nutrients that cause the algae bloom. I suppose too that a later drawdown would probably be a faster drawdown.
End result is less algae and better structure for the fish. I'm all for that!
