    In the first pic, Is that part of his gill hanging out?

    Yep, it was a dead gill from I'm guessing earlier this year. It still had a little color to it so I don't think it happened last year. I would guess they fall off after a couple years. For those that hook fish in the gill try to be careful not to rip them out like this but do release them because they obviously still can survive. We have caught four or five at least this year with gills hanging out.
