    Thumbs up Bass bite 10-26-09

Man, I almost forgot what it was like to fish in calm water! And to top it off, the smallies cooperated, too!

Sunday night's trip left a sour taste in my mouth, so I really didn't expect this trip to be much better. Being as nice as it was, it seemed like as good a time as any to do a little exploring. I started with a tube jig in a spot I normally fish in the warmer months, but only got a couple pike bite-offs. Then I tried a spot I have seldom ever fished, and never for bass - JACKPOT!

In about an hour I landed 7 nice smallmouth, and lost 3 or 4 more. Biggest ones were 18 and 19 inches. I only had about a dozen redtails with me, and went through them in short order. I actually had to go into the "used" minnow inventory to finish my trip, (don't throw out your beat up redtails until the end of the trip!) Caught the last one at around 7:20 pm, which with the overcast skies, was pretty well after dark.

Found them on a breakline on the west side of the bay in 18 to 25 FOW.
