For all those as ticked off as I am about the illegal netters, I suggest this... Stop going to the Manistique Casino. This casino is owned by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. It is this tribe that is dragging their feet on prosecuting their own members. So if you want to gamble, go to Hannaville Casino ( Chip-In ), as they have nothing to do with the illegal netters as far as I know...

Of course I'm serious. I'm still hoping the offenders get some justice from the court system,but in the meantime, folks surely don't have to patronize the tribes casinos. I know many locals that visit that casino, and if they truly care about this matter, they should stop going there immediately. This was tried a couple years ago in the Ludington/Manistee area because of the same issue with nets. From what I heard, it had limited impact. But I think many "Yoopers" are strong strong willed enough to be able to have some impact. I think we can have a much bigger impact up here just because there is a much smaller population up here for the casino's to draw from.

There is not a day at any boat launch that the topic does not comes up when fishermen meet. The problem is that everyone is in the dark as far as reliable updated information is concerned. The bays and the recreational use of them is a major income producer as well as the many jobs created. Problem is, many who visit casinos are addicted.

banning there casino is a start. call the tribal attorny in the soo and talk to him. see if something can be done. i have it on great athority that the soo tribe has given these guys (the tribal members) there fishing licenses back.that just sucks. there should be some kind of reprisal for there poaching.giving them back there netting, dosn't sound like these guys are going to get anything out of this.

I think Kevin and Quackhead are right . Stopping patronizing is one way that we can have a little control , and impact, if we all stick together.

Quackhead put it very well, and I couldn't agree more in that there should be a routine update on what EXACTLY is happening with the progression of this case. That way we, the people who are impacted by the ILLEGAL netting will have a concise idea of what is taking place and will then know EXACTLY what course of action to take . Whether that be letting our elected officials than know what course of action we would like them to take.


If we take an apathetic attitude about the outcome of this particular case, it will only desensitize us , so that ,what about the next time this happens, and the next etc. etc.. The time to set a president with consequences so this ILLEGAL netting is not tolerated again is now !

I think we should all chip in (no pun intented) and get a bill board somewhere close by the casino stating " Until the netters are put to justice NO GAMBLING at the (the casino name). Paid for by the LBDN walleye fisherman. I dont know the cost but I'm willing to put in $200 to start out with. What do you think?

I will tell you this much..

The local officers involved have been advised by the US Attorney's Office not to comment on the case to the public, so not to taint any possible Federal prosecution. Trust me they are more fustrated then anyone else about the delays and in-action by the courts and by their inability to explain to others what is going on and where the case is at. The case will move forward, someday! And those involved will get to court, someday!

People have the right to be a skeptic when it comes to this sort of activity, and its place in the eyes of the law. People arent wondering and complaining because justice is swift and consistant on these types of issues. It is almost too obvious that the tribal officials are hoping that this simply goes away. As long as sportsmen/women keep this issue in the light, it will have to be dealt with eventually. I like the idea of not patronizing indian gaming establishments. A billboard would be awesome, and can be rented for a couple hundred bucks for a month. I assume there would be costs involved with the hanging of the signage as well. Would be something to look into.

I agree with the boycotting of all the casinos until we see justice done. I know the Soo tribe does not run them all, but the other casinos could then put the pressure on them. Maybe they can all pitch in for a restocking program above and beyond what the DNR already does. Glad to hear there are others that think like we do.
