Fishing Reports for the St. Louis River

About 90% of the ice is out of the river with some of the back bays holding ice (kimbals, kilner, mud, grassy, pokeg. ect.) Nearly all the landings are open, Oliver still had a little ice infront of it this morning (4/15) but should be gone by this afternoon. I'll be out on the river this weekend poking around for some crappies and perch. I'll post back here on my findings.
Dustbuster and I made it out on Lake Superior from under the high bridge last thursday 4/9. Ice went out from the sand landing Wednesday night, we were there at 5:30am for a coho run. Started off slow but picked up later after a move up the northshore. We ended with 3 and Dusty was back out Friday he boated at least 6 more that morning.

The ice is gone out on the river. Back bays are open and fishable. This means I'll be out this week and weekend. Water levels are still low but I've seen lower. The forcast is rain for the weekend hopefully we get enough to make a difference. I'll report back with temps on monday.

Was out this morning and fishing was great! It took about an hour until we found the walleyes then it was over, limited with fish from 18-20in. Pictures coming soon!! Water temps where 55.8, caught fish on jigs and minnows slipping and pulling crawlers.

What a weekend!! Lots of Eyes!! Lots of Guys!! Walleyes are spread all of the river and the big fish are still here!!! 31's 32's 28's oh my!! Great time out on the St. Louis. Heading back out tonight.

As the Walleyes migrate down the river and get out of Spawn mode, and with the water warms up they get a little more aggressive.
Was down on the River tonight, Boated 9 walleyes lost another 4.

If anyone is heading down there, try trolling shad raps up stream, firetiger color, 1.0-1.3 mph 40-60 ft line out 6-9 ft dephts.

Good Luck muskie season is just right around the corner.

Fished Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday was nice wacked a bunch on cranks going up stream at 1-1.3 and then coming back down at 2.3 to 2.8. Friday, fished in the down pour, same program, cranks.
Saturday, was super windy 25-40mph winds. Fished the afternoon did very well. No really big fish but nice eaters 18-20 and a few we let go around 23-24 inches. Sunday fishing was great! A buddy of mine and I went out at
5:00 am and by 6:45 we caught a pile of fish trolling cranks. The key is to get out before all the boat traffic starts. Fish are in 6-9ft of water and it doesn't help when 30 boats buzz over the top of them at 40mph. They shut down, people still get fish, but fishing slows dramatically. Went back moed the lawn and got back on the water about 3pm and fished until dark and we worked'em trolling rigs on the flats down stream a bit. Had the place all to ourselves it was great. Even found some nicer fish in the 25-26.5 in range.

Well St. Louis opened above the Hwy 23 bridge yesterday. Fishing was great!! We had 25-35 mph winds again today so that kept the pressure down and the walleyes were on the feed. Trolling cranks and slipping jigs will get you into some fish. We fished for 4 hrs and boated 27 walleyes ranging from 18-25in. I can't stress enough if you want to catch fish/bigger fish you have to stay away from the large crowds of people. These fish live out in Lake Supeior and use the river to spawn and feed when the shinners spawn. They do not respond well to 30 boats ripping over there heads in 8 feet of water. Anyway the walleyes are spread out from the power house to the harbor. I fished the entire river this past weekend and we caught fish throught. Here are some pics from the last few days.

All of us have been out over the weekend, pretty slow as far as seeing fish go. Its a one bite wonder but its better than sitting on the couch. Water temps range from upper 50's to low 70's in the far backs of the sunny bays. What I do at this time of the year is cover water until I fine some active fish or fish. Put the t-motor on high and hammer!! total catch 52,(nice),36, 42
Just when I thought I've seen just about every thing on tuesday I watched Dustin hook a 42", fight it to the boat, I netted it, it jump out of the the net, I netted it again, he unhooked it while I was on the trolling motor and pulled it out of the net for a photo. Not all that extrordinary but... he did it all while talking on his cell phone!!! crazy

Dusty and I hit the river hard yesterday. Water temps ranged from 59.9 to 67 degrees and to discribe it in one word "SLOW" we fished weeds shallow, weeds deep, channel edges, wind blown shorelines, rocks, muscle beds, sand points,ect. Caught a couple pike and a big fat zero in the muskie department. We need warm weather and time.

They were trying to murder my topwaters today from 1-3pm, but when the wind died down it just killed all the action. I had 4 strikes with 2 of the muskies flying completely out of the water!

One of the fish hit twice and still couldn't get hooked. I don't know how a tiny pike can get hooked so well, and a musky with a big ol' mouth doesn't!?!

Dusty and I where out again last night boated two a 37.25, a 42 and lost one other. Again, cover water these fish are not chasing baits so it makes it hard to see if you're doing the right thing until you get bit!! A couple fish bumped baits and then are caught on a slower moving bait casted back. Have to find warm water this means more active fish. Water temps where 59-60.5 in the main river and in the mid 60's back in back waters down river.
