Weather was bouncing up and down for the Muskie Opener week (June 16) with some impressive but short lived storms passing through and now the past few days have wonderful weather. Kakagi (Crow) Lake mostly in the 60's with Lake of the Woods fighting to bounce into the 70's for surface temperatures. Looking like another week or so before swimming becomes popular.

Muskie Opener highlights - Best fish was 52", followed by 50", 49" and about a half dozen 48" along with several smaller. Opening day was probably the best day for finding Muskies that would bite and hang on. Best boat day was 6 Muskies in a day.

Lake Trout - fish are really scattered and not well established deep (should happen after the May Fly hatch winds down and just started seeing the May Flies here). Biggest Lake Trout of the year was caught 14.5 pounds and looking forward to someone taking my name off the biggest Lake Trout board :-) A few people tried Lake Trout fishing for the first time during evening hours... one had great success while the other 4 didn't find aggressive fish.

Northern Pike - Biggest Pike ever for us was found on Jessie Lake on an ultra light rig - 46" Northern Pike! Several groups found Northern Pike on Kakagi, surprising amount caught when other weeks people said they couldn't find them. Whitefish Bay was fastest Northern Pike action with 25-30 fish days being common. Stevens Bay still producing some Northern Pike action, but slowing due to the weed growth. South Narrows and Cedartree also reported good Northern Pike action.

Walleye - a few caught by Pike anglers in Whitefish Bay, but Cedartree Lake was the hotspot and included a very thick 27". Water levels have risen enough for boats to run up and down the rapids below the falls at Cedartree, so expecting a few more groups will head over that way.

Bass - Cedartree Lake highlight was a 20". South Narrows Lake was fast action and reasonable size. Steven Bay also reported to have Bass biting. Kakagi Bass still being found on and near beds one Bass fishing group caught 433 last week, several over 3 pounds, a few 5 pound and a 6 pound bass.

Considering the challenges the weather and conditions provided it was a pretty good week and more importantly everyone had a few laughs, few fish and a relaxing time.

A quiet week ahead at Boreal Bay Lodge and then things start ramping up again!
