Water temps much like the surface air temps are well behind normal historical averages. Water temps are between the low to mid 50's depending on what part of the lake you are on. Walleye's are very active and fishing is very good but you must understand their location. Small males are in 10' to 12' off rock points adjacent to spawning areas and easily targeted with jigs or weighted spinners. Larger females are available in spawning bays with favorable wind patterns. Look for last years weed edges in spawning bays that have wind blowing into them. Slowly backtroll spinners with either minnows or crawlers along the edges of last years vegitation and expect lot's of action but the difference in boat control and position can mean the difference between many fish and just a few. Smallmouth fishing had been tremendous. Pre-spawn fish have been in just about every location. Remember not all Bass spawn at the same time. Some are currently bunched off rock points but most are in the edges of bull rush and weed and rock combo's. Slow rolling spinner bait's off bull rush edges in 4' to 6' will give you all the action you can handle with these fiesty fighters. Northern Pike action has been more difficult to pinpoint, typical shallow patterns have been sporadic at best. With more consistant weather patterns expect shallow water vegitation areas to pick up. Musky's have been active and many are being caught incidentally by Walleye anglers but remember that Musky season is not yet open and all fish should be water released wherever possible. Overall even though the spring has been a cool one the fishing has been very good and as more consistant weather progresses, June should prove to be a banner month this year.
