Thread: Rough Weather Good for Walleyes

Default Rough Weather Good for Walleyes

Strong winds from the West. Strong winds from the East. Strong winds from the South. Often in the same day.

Opening week of the 2009 Walleye Season was a true test for anglers. Finding a good fishing spot "out of the wind" was a challenge. High winds, cold hands and a soft Walleye bite is not for everyone. Most people came prepared for the elements. Some did not.

With water levels a foot higher than a year ago, our returning experienced anglers quickly realized that fish location varied from a year ago. This year Walleyes were taken in 4-5 feet of water...often in the quiet bends in the slow moving Mississippi River Headwaters....that meander from Big Wolf Lake (1100 acres) into Andrusia Lake (1600 acres) and then into Cass Lake (10,000 acres). The evening bite was often better than the day bite. Our location makes evening fishing simple.

Should any person suggest that boating access from Big Wolf Lake to Andrusia Lake to Cass Lake is difficult...such a statement would be wholly inaccurate. It is not uncommon to see 200 horse motors in this area.

Oak Haven Resort is located in a quiet, secluded, pristeen area. If you spend even a minute in the spring worrying about your reservation...ice on the lakes or high winds...you need to discover Oak Haven Resort. During opening week 2009 at least five rigs of fishermen drove the 25 miles north from the resort on Leech Lake they were staying at...to Oak Haven Resort's secluded boat ramp. They said they "couldn't even leave the docks" on Leech Lake due to high winds. Our location gives you the CHOICE of fishing Big Wolf Lake, Andrusia Lake, Cass Lake or the clear, slow moving Headwaters of the Mississippi River...which passes through all these lakes and more.

These waters just NW of Cass Lake's Allen's Bay provide hiding places for Giant Muskies, Big Pike, Nice Walleyes, Huge Crappies and Bluegills....and endless hiding places for big Largemouth Bass. Or you can catch a hundred Perch in a day!

But yet some people think we must be located on some fast moving dangerous river water. Seems as if some people's imaginations get the best of them when they hear the word "river." This channel here...in the middle of these exciting lakes...is slow moving, clear and non-flooding. It is loaded with vegetation and contains many fish species. AND it provides great fishing when Cass Lake and Leech Lake still have ice in May....AND it provides shelter from those high winds.

We are 25 miles North of Walker...on County Road 75.....four miles past the Palace Casino. (Also 8 miles East of Bemidji) We have 5 Permanent docks and plenty of dock space for your boats. (No charge for docking, charging boat batteries or launch when you rent a cabin for a week or longer) We have our own boat ramp, bait and 91 octane gas for boats. Lot's of electrical hookups for boats. Every Cabin has AC and 55+ quality TV channels. Our lodge has great hand scooped ice cream cones, Sprecher's Root Beer on tap and Bud and Bud Light on tap. Two Heated Swimming Pools and more. Improvements over the past two years are too many to mention.

See pictures from the first week of the 2009 fishing season and more...by clicking on "Photo Gallery"....then click on "Wall of Fame 2009". Nice stringers of Walleyes and some really big Crappies too.

We are a clean, fun resort in a great location.
