Any suggustions on which model of fish finder to buy which would be compatable with the maps you are reccomending? Would you get it with or without GPS?

Any current Lowrance unit will work fine. It must have GPS or the map card won't work.

Anyone know which map version, Hot Spots or LakeMaster, offers the most detail of Castle Rock?

    Default Maps

I talked to the guys from Lakemaster recently. They assure me that their maps are constantly being updated from input from their 'survey teams'. I could not find update info from HotSpots. Maybe Jerry can shed more light about them.

Hot Spots maps are made from old topographic surveys before the lake was formed. Very inaccurate. LakeMaster physically surveys the lake with sonar and GPS.

I went to my local Bass Pro Shop Thursday and looked over the new HD Lowrances. I'm impressed with some of the new features. I had the guy show me the comparisons between the built in Insite maps (Hotspots), Navionics and LakeMaster add-ons. Quality and improved detail are in that order, in my opinion. The LakeMaster chip had much more detail in line with what I would want. However, the wisconsin Lakemaster chip would not load up in the Lowrance HDS-5 as it should have. It did load up in the HDS-7 model. I am not sure if the chip was the 2009 version or earlier.

Now if I want a new system I have to decide fast. The price is a big factor though.

Jerry, are you using one of these models and which one?

The new chips just became available May 1st so it may be the old version. I don't have an HD unit and probably won't until they get the bugs worked out of them.
