    Default Water Temp

I have seen posts about water temps and am wondering at what depth do you take the reading at ? Also do the muskies hit the flats for spawning and do they prefer gravel or a mud bottom ?

They will use the areas of the warmest water. I am not saying they stay there all day for several consecutive days but when it is time to drop eggs, they will likely be around timber or any vegetation. Shallow mud or sand flats as well as gravel areas can be spawning areas too.

As for measuring water temps, the shallows (3ft. and less) will usually be about the same from top to bottom depending on water clarity, bottom type and current sun brightness. Clear water shallow areas can vary significantly when comparing dark bottom to light bottom areas.
