My guess is that you are you looking north towards fisherman's landing, with the small island on the right side of the photo being the one that is west of the landing.

You are looking into the Lake Ten area at dusk.

Actually, you are making a big mistake. You should be fishing instead of taking pictures, but those are some awesome pictures.

We refer to that time of day as "the window". From about 30 minutes before sunset until 30 to 60 minutes after sunset can often be the best fishing of the day. We normally pay close attention to the wind and other factors during the day to decide where we want to be during the window, and more times than not it pays off.

We call this time of the day "Gloaming". Besides, we probably already have our limit and cruising homeward with a kool one.

You are at the very south end of the big water, going into beaver creek, facing Rat Lake (sun setting over Rat Lake), with the Lake Ten area way to the right.

Wish I'd have won the lottery, but in truth we're still working at it. It all has to do with being in the right place at the right time and sticking your neck out. Lots of people say what you say, but you have to give up your current way of living. I'm lucky to have a wife like Fluffy or it couldn't of happened. Its a long way to town and then you can't find what you need or pay four times the price. You learn to do without, actually you save that way. You are very remote from everything and a lot of people couldn't live like that. The prices of land up here have gone through the roof. I couldn't start over in today's market, again, right place at the right time.

Now think back, could you and your family live this kind of life (it's not for everybody)?

In the early 80's, I took the family up there for our weekly fishing trip. My wife could stand it until about Wednesday, and then she had to spend a day in Minocqua shopping.

I owned a business in Milwaukee and didn't tell the wife but was entertaining the idea of buying a resort on the TFF. So we're driving around the flowage during the week and I'm talking to owners. Finally she asked me what's going on. When I told her my thoughts....wow. I hadn't heard that kind of language since I was in basic training in the Army...and then it was coming from a Drill Sergeant.

So, I see your point. It isn't for everybody. My wife did tell me recently that since I love the place so much, she'd be willing to come up there with me again....for a long weekend!

Boy Tiny you are right. My old friend Casey Sliwicki, who bought Joe Popko's resort and years later sold it to Bill Tutt, used to live pretty lean. His place came up for sale after he passed and I was really pretty seriously considering it. But decided I couldn't afford that place AND the divorce that would have resulted. Sounds like if Don had done what he wanted and I had done what I wanted we would've been in the TFF Chapter of the How Much Is Your Alimony? Club Looks like we're going to have to just enjoy the times we're able to get up there and the pictures you post here the rest of the time. Thanks for keeping us in touch with one of the most beautiful places on the planet!

Well Gus, it looks like your taking all the prizes....

In the early 80's we almost bought the Tip Top resort (Pike Lake, Mercer) from out very good friends Leo and Olive. The big thing was we didn't have all the money and there were not the jobs to subsidized the income. Don't thing the little Gommers (two boys) or Fluffy would have had a problem adjusting. Every time I go by there I think about the what if's.

You're way back in southwest corner of Lake Bastine. We usually stay at a place right near there which I believe is the old Lake Bastine Lodge. Great place for a big group!

Picked that one out pretty quick too, but Randy got his hand up first. Those loons are right in front of Jim Hemmy's mom's old place. Jim was a guide from Park Falls and had a small sports shop there. If you look at an old Hot Spots map, he's listed as a resource.

Which brings up a great question, where IS Jim Hemmy? My brother and I used him as a guide a bunch of years back, and really enjoyed his company. Even though, back then, he did prefer the smallies. Never could locate him afterwards.

I believe Jim Hemmy moved to Green Bay. He used to fish in our Tuesday night bass league in Park Falls. Scott

Scott you're right. He did move to Green Bay and was handling the fishing tackle dept. for Gander Mountain there. He was also doing some guiding on Green Bay. Wanted my brother and I to come over and fish with him, but we never seemed to get our schedules to coincide. Over the last couple of years we've lost touch with him, ie. emails went unanswered, so I have no idea where he is now.

I'm getting stoked for our Summer trip.

The flowage goes back to my grandfather in our Chicago family. My grandfather would fish with Popko, my Dad grew up down the street from Joe Shamet in Cicero and we'd spend our Summer vacation at Shamet's.

After my Dad died a few years ago (his ashes are near Sandy Island) we started an every other year reunion at Fort Flambeau. My sisters drive up with their kids from Chicago, my whole family flies in from Seattle.

The flowage is a little slice of heaven. I can hardly wait for June.
