We launched the boat, rolled the dice and made a long run to an area that has held high-water muskies before but I hadn’t fished it for a couple of years. James made his first cast and just as he was preparing for the 8, he got hammered by a smallish musky. Yes, a musky on the first cast of the day. (I am pretty sure that was the first time I had ever seen that happen.). Then, about 20 casts later, Fred hooks up with a 40-ish inch fish in the same area. Just as I was ready to scoop her up, she hits a deadly gator-roll and shakes free.

We moved to a different area and James gets a follow but cannot tell if it was a pike or musky. After seeing some good action in the first couple of hours, we did not see another fish for the rest of the day.

Water temps ranged between 49 and 52 depending on location. The floating leaves were plentiful to say the least and a large amount that have yet to fall. We are planning to chase muskies again on Saturday but the weather will be MUCH different.

Good luck and stay tuned!
