This week we had classic August weather having high temperatures in the low to mid 70’s and lows at night somewhere around 50 degrees. The full moon was at its best setting over the horizon every morning for those early risers to see. The fishing was good for both new and long time guests as you will see and read below.

2nd day they had a fabulous day catching many Smallmouth Bass, Keaghan having the hot had landing over 20 on a Blue Fox Spinner with a red blade and purple bell. Walt also landed a 29-inch Muskie. 3rd day was excellent fishing catching 16 Northern Pike and 12 Smallmouth Bass mostly on the larger side. Largest Northern Pike was 35-inches and most were 30-inches or larger. The biggest Smallmouth Bass was a 19-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. The story behind the catch is as good as the catch itself. While Walt was taking a break he had his fishing rod laying over his lap and his lure was just above the water with a hook just barely touch the waters surface. All of a sudden Walt’s fishing rod was almost jerked into the water as this Trophy Smallmouth Bass came up and smacked his lure. An amazing fish story and an even better fishing memory for Walt and his grandson.

4th and final day they had a good day catching Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass, but had to keep moving catching only a fish or two in each location. Walt caught his third Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass, this one measuring 18.5-inches and Keeghan had the biggest Northern Pike of the day at 32-inches. On the evening fish they added to their daily totals and took in the last sunset, which was outstanding. Before departure Walt made reservation for the same dates in 2020. **

Back after 20-years, was Stan Kulis, his wife Helen Marie, and son Matt from Cooksville, TN. All were very excited to be here and Stan and Matt were chomping at the bit to get out on the water fishing, while Helen Marie was here to enjoy the wilderness surroundings and do her quilting which is a passion of hers. First day they did well catching Northern Pike with Matthew landing the big pike of the day at 28-inches, and Stan had a huge 17.5-inch Smallmouth Bass. 2nd day they caught a mix of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike learning their way up Little Vermilion Lake. 3rd day had them doing very well on Northern Pike as Matt had great success on his newly acquired lure catching Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass.

4th day was a, knock it out of the park day, having action all day long catching 28 Northern Pike and 7 very sizable Walleye. 5th day was another very good day and had Stan and Matt catching over 20 Fish with 3 being Northern Pike and the rest were big Smallmouth Bass, Matt landing a very large 17.5-incher and Stan catching an 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. That evening Stan and Helen Marie went out, which is unusual as Helen normally does not fish. Well, she did well coming back very excited with a picture of a BIG Smallmouth Bass she caught, all in all this was a very memorable day for the Kulis family. 6th and final day Stan and Matt made the most of the day fishing all day long until just before supper, each catching 8 fish, a combination of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. All left having a wonderful family vacation, making memories that will last a lifetime. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make some of your family memories.

Joseph and Rene Ramirez from Etoile, TX were very excited to be at Fireside Lodge for their first Canadian Wilderness Fishing Adventure. 1st day Joseph said they were blessed having great success being new to Little Vermilion Lake. They caught many Smallmouth Bass with a lot being on the bigger size including a few Trophy Smallmouth Bass plus Joseph hooked and landed a very large 38.5-inch Tiger Musky. The fish Jumped clear out of the water and gave Joseph an excellent fight and with Rene’s assist in netting Joseph landed the fish getting a great photo. Joseph and Rene are not new to fishing but having never fished Northern waters before seemed to have adjusted rather well.

2nd day was another very good day weather wise and fishing, catching 15 good size Smallmouth Bass along with 6 Northern Pike. 3rd and final day, WOW 3 days fly bye, they had a fabulous day catching a dozen bigger Smallmouth Bass and several Northern Pike and it seemed that Rene caught most of hers a square lipped crank bait. Upon departing both Joseph and Rene expressed how enjoyable a visit they had experiencing fishing in the North for the very first time and having the opportunity to meet several people in the dinning room having some great conversations.

Long time return guests Bill and Pam Hochstetter from Rockford, IL were glad to be back with their granddaughter Tanaza for her first time. DOA was huge as they had a nice run of Smallmouth Bass before supper and Tanaza caught an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass within the first few hours of fishing. 1st day was excellent catching some nice Smallmouth Bass and Tanaza hooked and landed her very first ever Northern Pike, a very hefty 28-incher. 2nd day was GREAT catching over 30 Smallmouth Bass before suppertime, and as Bill said in the dinning room the day was not over yet. That evening they went out fishing and caught a few more fish to add to their already great day of fishing.

4th day was another good day but it was a little more work as the fish were not as agreeable. It was a day that you just caught a few fish in each location, but their many years of fishing with us at Fireside Lodge gave them lots of locations to fish, making a difference in the days outcome. 5th and final day was super catching many fish, but Martha had a very special day catching a 20-inch Trophy Smallmouth Bass and a Massive 44-inch Trophy Northern Pike. Both of these fish were amazing in girth and the pictures tell the whole story. Paul also caught an 18.5-inch Trophy Smallmouth Bass. Both left having a great time and hope to return in the near future.

3rd and final day they attempted boating to one of our creek accessible lakes having an adventure to be a topic of conversation among these for a long time. First they struggled getting through the creek mouth because of a silt bar created by North winds a few days previously. After accomplishing that and traveling 90% the way through the creek they encountered a big Beaver Dam that was impassable for them. After a 2-hour excursion they returned to Little Vermilion Lake doing very well catching Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. In the dinning room there was a buzz of excitement around their table as they described their experiences with expression and laughter that filled the air. You bet they will be talking about the memories of this day for years to come.
