This week the weather persisted to stay on the cool side staving off the Smallmouth Bass from spawning on most of the lake except for a few places where the water tends to warm up quicker and not exposed to the deeper main lake water that cools down water temps during windy conditions.

Tony always targets Smallmouth Bass, really enjoying the fight they give him, but in addition to catching Smallmouth Bass he also caught a Muskie, and a Lake Trout along with some Northern Pike making his third day special catching four fish species. His very best day catching Smallmouth came on one of his last three days landing 19 BIG Smallmouth Bass all over 17 inches and 5 met our goal for a Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass which is 18 inches or larger. Tony not only had great fishing during his stay but also enjoyed the company of past Fireside Lodge friends and met a few new people.

Long time, 25 year guests, Gerald & Zack Adams from Shawnee and Moore, OK arrived thrilled to be back fishing for Smallmouth Bass. 1st day was great catching 18 Big Smallmouth Bass all 17-17.5 inches, with their favorite finesse rig, the sinking worm wacky style. 2nd day they caught 27 Big Smallmouth Bass including several trophy size Smallmouth Bass between 18-19-inches, and Gerald had the largest at 19.5-inches. Their 3rdth day was a rain out, but the 4th and fifth days were great catching many more Smallmouth Bass between 17-18 inches with several more over 18 inches and both Zack and Gerald caught 19-inchers. They had one period of time the action was so fast they caught 29 Smallmouth Bass in less than an hour and they caught almost a dozen trophy Smallmouth Bass during their stay.

Another accomplishment was Zack had a day to try out his new fly rod that Gerald gave him for Christmas. Well after a short period of time Zack was fly-casting very well bringing a whole new dimension to Zacks love for the sport of fishing. Gerald and Zack also are very good conversationalists keeping up their tradition of making new Fireside Lodge friends during their visit, this year hitting it off with Kent and Bill (below) from Atlanta. Gerald and Zack left having another great Fireside Lodge visit and hope to return in 2020.

Wayne & Augi Agositni from Mooresville, NC & Northvale, NJ with Tom & Greg Rubino from Hasbrouck Hgts, NJ returned for their 6th time to catch primarily Northern Pike. First day out they caught 18 Northern Pike a half dozen Smallmouth Bass along with three nice walleye ranging from 20-23.5-inches. Yes, That’s right I said walleye. Little Vermilion Lake historically did not have any walleye population however in 1993 the first one was caught by a 28-year long time guest Frank Hazzard. Since then, up to about 5 years ago, only 3-5 per year were caught and since then we started to have incidental catches of 30-50 per year with most being 20-29.5 inches having big robust bodies.

Obviously Little Vermilion Lake is still not a lake to promote for Walleye but it seems like we are developing what might turn out to be a trophy walleye lake that has a low population but produces very large fish. 2nd day was a rainy cold day brining them in by late morning after catching just a few fish, but before surrendering to weather Tom had an unexpected catch and fight from a nice Lake Trout. He was very surprised how strong a Lake Trout was having never caught one before. 3rd and final day was great catching many Northern Pike, a few Smallmouth Bass but saw many as they were roaming around staging up to spawn. Wayne also caught a BIG 27.5-inche Lake Trout. All departed having a great time among family and friends and hope to return again.

Long time guests Kent Williams and Bill Black from Brookhaven & Atlanta, GA were glad to be back fishing for their 14th visit and at a new time of the year for them. Always fishing during July and August before they decided to try the springtime fishing for Smallmouth Bass. Well, they learned that fishing at different times of the year means applying different techniques in much different locations. First day they fished in locations familiar to them in July and August with minimal results. After some discussion and planning they started to try areas that were better suited for early spring fishing obtaining much better results catching 25+ Big Smallmouth Bass on their third day including Kent landing a 19” and 18” trophy and Bill catching 4 trophy Smallmouth Bass 18 to 18.5 inches.

By their fourth and final day the results nearly doubled from the 3rd day catching 43 Smallmouth Bass almost all being 17-inches or larger with 3 more 19-inch trophies and 6 more Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18 to 18.5 inches. They both left very pleased having great fishing along with meeting a couple of new Fireside Lodge friends in Gerald and Zack Adams (above) from Oklahoma. As always Kent was already planning for their next trip before departing.
