Thread: The End.......

    Default The End.......

The recent horrid weather has brought this year's season to a quick and unexpected end. Darren and Carol Nixon, Eric and Kathy Strutz, and Tim Grzybowski and David Larson were just ahead of me on a rapid exit to Lake of the Woods. Darren filmed my graceful approach as you can all appreciate. When I say in the nick of time, I really mean it. Next morning the landing was locked in.

To me that looked like a graceful landing. How did you make it home by Airboat or Mailman?

Neither. Was going to do the mailman shuffle, but decided against it with the skim ice from Brush. Had a neighbor that keeps his boat on the island come get us. Pretty much ice from Flag Island already.

    That happened quickly!

How long until we see if the Bomber will start?

Shut us out quickly, but not progressing very fast. This morning, had about 1/2 mile of ice for the first time. But lots of wind, and a warm up starting. Planning on the first airboat trip on Monday. Weather permitting. Sleds are out, and using them daily on the grounds. Have about 6 inches of snow on the ground. Don't see bombers for a while. Unless a very cold snap hits. Fricken winds today gusting into the 30s. Can't recall a windier month.

Is the ice early this year or about typical, despite happening very quickly?

About what it used to be when we first moved here. Been getting later and later over the years. But more of a problem as we are landlocked, and no hard freeze in sight.

Air boat or nothing at the moment then. Does the post get out still at the moment or do you have to wait for hard ice?

Either airboat, or my Bell 47 Jet Ranger. Barely making ice, so after a premature end, a prolonged freeze up. Mail has to come by airboat (weather permitting), and I'm the guy that volunteered to run it to and from the island this year. Probably tomorrow.

That looked very brave with the plough. Had visions of it slithering down the ramp!

Here's a pic of the Frito Bandito actually delivering the mail with the help of my neighbor Dick. Looks colder than it was......

Not exactly Sully Sullenberger piloting that thing.Likely no 'miracle on the Hudson' thing happening there.
