The unofficial opener this week end was fantastic. Fished Friday afternoon with friends Bob Schultz from Atlanta and Rick Runquist from Walker. Fish were in 7 to 8 feet of water. We caught three limits and released twelve beautiful fish in the protected slot. All the females had spawned, no eggs were present. We were able to find some spot tailed shiners, which are now scarce. Northland stand up jigs in 1/4 ounce with some green highlights were best colors. We also jigged very aggressively. On Saturday we had three limits in an hour and a half. Sunday was a tougher bite but we still managed limits of fish. The fish moved deeper to the eleven foot range which took us a while to figure out. All and all the delayed opener was a success. Hopefully the trappers will catch more shiners. We had success with some river shiners and some rainbows.
