    Cool August 25 Fishing Report

August 25, 2012 Fishing Report by Jeff Winters

WOW! August is sure slipping by fast. This entire month has pretty much been a cold front. Water temps have fallen into the upper sixties now and this drop has had effects on fishing. The top fish right now is MUSKY. These prized fish have responded very well to the cooler temps. There has been a very pronounced morning bite window that takes place between 6 to 9 a.m. I’m finding fish on deep weed edges. Glade baits are working the best when it comes to getting their attention. I’ve also had limited action on top-water and cranks. Stick baits have been very quiet as of late. Some big fish are moving so it would be a good time to head out for musky.

WALLEYE remain difficult. It is very hard to stay with these fish. Lakes have been popping up & down – they seem to change with each front. Reports have fish all over the lakes. Clear, big waters have fish being found in 30 to 45 ft. of water, while most lakes are in deep weeds and timber. We found them up as shallow as 5 ft in timber, so try everything. There is also a transition taking place from nightcrawlers to minnows, so be prepared for anything in the bait department. Jigs or slip-bobbers are working.

The Flowages are dropping fast right at the moment. The Turtle-Flambeau is a good 3 feet down. Fish remain scattered in the timber and are just starting to look at minnows. Be careful out there as things are getting in range of lower units. The Willow continues its drop. The pier by the dam landing is out of the water now. Action is beginning to pick up. Smaller crappies are beginning to show up right where they should. It shouldn’t be long before the big ones show up. It’s a minnow bite on the Willow.

That’s it for now. Catch you on the lakes. Good luck fishing.
