Warm water has moved in after three days of North and Northeast winds last week. As you know those winds gusted up to 35 mph and the water warmed up in a hurry. We found temperatures as high as 70 degrees down at 100 feet. Why is that important? Let me explain. Salmon fishing is a cold water fishery. Their preferred temperature range is 50 to 52 degrees. Just like people when it gets uncomfortably cool or warm we move to a more comfortable area. The salmon do the same thing either moving further off shore or down deep searching for their preferred temperatures.

Therefor the fleet moved further off shore and ran our downriggers just off the bottom. Yes, that's where we found the four year old Kings (Chinook Salmon). Also in the mix are some nice sized Rainbows who seem to tolerate warmer water. The salmon spawning run should be starting any time and cooler water will be the key. Look for fishing to improve over the next two weeks.

See ya on the water,

Capt Joe Penar
