Walleye fishing in the Western Basin of Lake Erie has been very good in April and May. We finished up one of the best Jig Fishing seasons we have seen in a long time. It lasted longer also until about May 7, and then we switched over to worm harnesses. We have seen several big fish caught in April and May, the biggest in our Marina 32.8 in. and in the 13 lb. +. We personally caught some in the 28.0 to 30.0 range and qualify for Fish Ohio Walleye award. Since we have made the switch we are drifting or trolling in the 16 ft. to 28 ft of water and getting nice catches of Walleye. There are days when big fronts move in like this past Saturday and shut down the bite. New ODNR rule change on how Walleye are to be kept for transportation, "a patch of skin is to be left attached for identification until you reach your home". Limits are sill set a 6 walleye per person per day beginning May 1, through the end of the season. We have caught several smaller Walleye under 15 inches so we know that there have been some good hatches in the last couple years.
