Do you need an ORV sticker or snowmobile "trail permit" if your going out on the ice? Haven't had an ORV sticker for years, but then again I rarely get checked while fishing LBDN. Just wondering.

4yrs. ago I ask 3 dnr officers at there office. If I take off my atv from my trailer on the ice do I need a sticker, if it doesn't touch the ground. answer: depends on how the officer interupts yhe rule. Could not get a yes or no answer. ( orv: off ROAD vehicle ) ? is ice a road.

    Default ORV sticker

I spoke with a DNR Officer (friend) 2 years ago and the rules were. If you off load an atv within 100 ft of the waters edge and proceeded to the ice you didn't need a sticker. Now I don't believe this law has changed but I would look-up on the state website and have a printed copy with you. No Officer can memorize all the laws.
Lets hep them and us also by having a copy with you. It may save you a head ache.

All off Road vehicles need to have an ORV sticker while operating on public lands or on the ice. A snowmobile does not need a trail permit when being used on the ice for fishing purposes.

Follow what ever interpretation you want, but the the sticker is much cheaper than the fine for not having one.

You can find all the necessary information at http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook , and specifically at http://www.offroad-ed.com/mi/handbook/registration.htm

"Private land owners, owners' family members, and their invited guests are not required to license ORVs that are operated exclusively on the owners' private property.

Licensing is required of ORVs used in areas open to public operations, regardless of whether the ORV is owned by a resident or nonresident of Michigan."
