Walleye Tourney

I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been much about the Walleye tournament going on this weekend. The only thing I've heard about is the not so professional way of some fisherpeople loading their boats. I was hoping to travel down to the weigh in but not sure of time or place. I do agree that people should respect the way the 95% of the people who actually do properly use the boat launches on a regular basis. Hopefully there will be access to this beautiful fishery for years to come.
With the financial state that our state is in we don't need to be spending money foolishly because of people that can't take care of the launches. Of course, this only my opinion.

To those of you from Escanaba who monitor this board I would like to say "thanks" for the great hospitality and an excellent tournament. We launched from the Escanaba River access every day we fished and I have to say that it is a beautiful boat launch. Every slot is clearly marked for anglers so there is no excuse for power loading boats. We never did... I never saw anyone doing so.

Chris, thanks for the info here and at the bait shop. The crawlers were in great shape and lasted us through the tourney. It was a definite eye-opener for me and my son. We hung in and worked with the boards and spinners several times, but it just didn't seem to be producing for us along Black Bottom (operator error, most likely). We knew that most of the boats going after big fish were heading out to the shoals on the big water, but we stuck with the bay. After a couple of sheephead and perch on the boards, we fell back to our comfort zone and headed to the north end and started pitching jigs in the weeds. If you can believe it, we found that purple Northland jigs and white twisters seemed to be a magic combo. As I'm sure anyone here who knows those waters will tell you, most of the fish we caught were smaller, but it was good to get into the walleyes nonetheless. The second day was about the same, but near the end we got into a nice little school of walleyes and other fish hanging out in front of the beach south of the Gladstone marina. We were just pulling SR5s (black and silver, blue and white) in about 13 feet when the wind was blowing into that shore when we ran into the fish. That filled out our 5 keepers for the day plus a nice 16 inch smallmouth.

Overall it was a fun experience for me and my family. Thanks again!

Glad you guys had fun. Sorry the fishing wasn't up to it's usual standards for this time of year. At least you were able to bring in a limit one day, which was better than a lot of teams did, (some of the locals didn't even do that.) We sold a ton of blades during the week leading up to the tourney. No surprise that anything purple was hot.

Diane and I would like to thank everyone from the tournament that stopped in. Always interesting to compare notes on walleye fishing with folks from other parts of the country, (who knew there was walleye fishing in Texas?) We really appreciated the extra business. It was a nice shot in the arm, going into what is usually a slow time of year for us.
