May 24 Fishing Report
Hi folks.
Memorial Day weekend is approaching and some decent fishing should greet area anglers. Walleye fishing maintains its steady pace. While we haven’t had that “jumping in the boat” bite yet, nice catches of walleye are there to be had – you just have to work them. With the up-and-down weather roller coaster where temps go from the low 80’s on Friday, to frost warnings on Wednesday morning, fish tend to not like those big swings in water temp. The bite has definitely geared towards late mornings and early afternoons when we get this cold start. On normal days where we have a mild morning, fish tend to slow down dramatically if it’s one of those hot afternoons. Jig-and-minnow combinations have still been working best on these fish and weeds are the key to finding them. I have not located anything in the wood yet, but that should happen soon.
Another thing when heading is, is to take some crawlers and leeches with you as water temps are settling in the low to mid 60’s and a meat bite should also begin with the different bug hatches taking place. One fish that really turned on, are the northerns. They’ve kept the rod bending in between walleyes.
Largemouth bass seem to have backed off with the warming trend this past week, but were replaced with smallmouth bass. We should see both species in the shallow water for the upcoming holiday weekend. At this moment in time, anglers are having fun with the crappies as these tasty little morsels are up on the bed in most area lakes. Let’s hope these cold mornings don’t push them back. If they stay up there, this is another fish anglers are going to have fun with over the upcoming weekend.
The big anticipation for a lot of anglers this weekend is the opening of the muskie season here in northern Wisconsin. I’ve been seeing a lot of musky activity while fishing walleyes in the weeds. If you’re heading out for these fish, concentrate your efforts on any green weed you can find. Their prey will be in these weeds and that’s where you’ll find the muskies also. Keep your lures on the slow side when retrieving. If these muskies are anything like the walleyes, they will not put forth a lot of effort when grabbing the lure.
