August was a very good month for Yellow Perch fishing in the Western Basin. The Charters we had were very pleased with the limit catches of 7 to 10 in. of 30 perch per person per day. Most retail stores that sell fresh water perch get from $12.00 to $14.00 a pound. We fished in 28 to 30 ft of water near "B" & "C" cans using spreaders with 3/4 oz. weights and a single snelled # 4 hook off each end tipped with a minnow. Get it down in a hurry to the bottom, pick it up just a tad and bamm you pretty much get a bite in no time at all. Doubles were not uncommon. Some fish went longer than the 10" and a 12" + is a beauty. All fish look healthy, very solid and believe me when they are fried up with a light batter it's doesn't get any better eating. Capt. Ron's favorite recipe is equal parts of Progresso Italian style bread crumbs, light pancake mix and Andy's Red. Put one cup of mixture in a gallon zip lock bag. Wash and drain fish put in about a 8 to 10 fillet's shake the bag remove fish and do it again until all fish done. Deep fry until golden or fish floats to top 2 minutes max or less at 400 degrees. Dust with Sea Salt and enjoy.
