    Default Sunscreen, What Works

Here's an interesting article that my friend sent me. As I get older exposure to the sun is more of a concern. It is not something that I take lightly any more.

    Kevin:

Have enjoyed your website the past few years. Grew up fishing for Muskie on Pike Bay... now do most of my fishing on Leech. As a Dermatologist that works on Skin Cancer all day and a muskie fisherman that loves to be on the lake casting. Ill give my 2 cents on the sunscreen subject. First Im 55, have already had 3 non-melanomas (prob all caused from hours of fishing). My sister who has not protected herself as much as I has had 25 BCC's and SCC's at age 59. There is a family tendency as you see. When fishing during the day, I wear a brimmed had with balero strap to keep on, or a Keys brimmed cap with ear flaps. If its windy which it usually is when fishing I also wear a Buff face headgear from Bass Pro shop, a columbia thin but tight knit nylon long sleeve shirt that is ventilated in back and under arms, same style long pants, as well as fingerless fishing gloves. Do I use sunscreen.... yes if its not windy. I do not use sunscreed with Retinol or vitamin A in it, agree might increase risk of skin damage. The sunscreens I usually use have Zinc Oxide and Titanium DiOxide as their main ingredients. I pat this on and reapply every 2 hrs. I agree there are concerns about the newer sunscreen ingrediants. Zn oxide and titanium dioxide are sun BLOCKs not sun screen. But you will look like Casper the ghost after application. Hope this helps, check out the Buff (Tm) headgear if you dont want to wear sunscreen..unfortunately they dont have a Muskie pattern, mine are all Dorado (Dolphinfish) pattern
