The first annual Hayward Area Crappie Fishing Contest on Saturday, May 1 will feature $11,000 in prizes for anglers, who can catch and register crappies from dozens of area lakes within a 50-mile radius.

Eligible waters range from the Eau Claire Lakes and Lake Namekagon on the north to Lake Winter and Lake Chetac and Long Lake on the south, from Stanberry and Stone Lake on the west to Moose Lake and Clam Lake on the east.

The contest is sponsored by the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in collaboration with the Hayward Lakes Visitors and Convention Bureau. Registration forms are now available at Holiday Station stores in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin and will continue to be sold through Friday, April 30. The entry fee is only $10.

The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame expects thousands of anglers of all ages and skill levels to register for this year’s inaugural event. The one-day contest will get under way at 12:01 a.m. May 1. Weigh-in will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hall of Fame, culminating with a weigh-in gala at 2 p.m. Nationally-recognized outdoor personality Ron Schara will emcee the event and present awards.

The cash prizes include: First place-$3,500 (adult), $2,000 (children 15 and under), $1,000 (media); second place—$2,000 (adult), $1,000 (children); third place—$1,000 (adult), $500 (children).

A 2010 Hayward Crappie Contest “Championship Cup” will be presented to the angler with the heaviest crappie. The winner’s name will be engraved on the cup, which will remain on display at the Hall of Fame.

To kick off the crappie contest and fishing opener weekend, the Fishing Hall of Fame will host an all-you-can-eat crappie feed with all the fixings at the Original Famous Dave’s on Round Lake, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 30. The cost is $30 per person or $55 per couple. Participants will have an opportunity to meet Schara.

There will be free drawings for more than $5,000 worth of merchandise, including four limited-edition color remarqued framed art prints by Scott Zoellick.

Tickets for the crappie feed are available at the Hall of Fame between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through April 26.

The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame is a 501(c)3 non-profit museum and home to Hayward’s landmark, world-famous, four-story-tall musky.
