On Monday in Washington, D.C., President Obama's staff is holding a closed-door meeting about what actions the federal government might take to stop Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. While you can't see what happens in the meeting, you can call the White House at 202-456-1414 to voice your opinion.

Permanently close the locks in Chicago before Asian carp can get into Lake Michigan and beyond, ruining our lakes and killing thousands of jobs.

Rumors of a federal plan that would leave the locks open most days have begun to be published in media reports. For example, under one scenario the locks would be open four days per week and closed three days. This makes no more sense than keeping criminals in jail four days a week and hoping nothing bad happens on the other three days. When will the emphasis be placed on protecting the Great Lakes instead of the narrow interests of one state?

You know after reading this it's frustrating to say the least.

Number one, what exactly is the rational behind "A closed door meeting? I thought this guy was going to make everything transparent ! Obviously not.

Secondly, after all the invasive species that have been introduced into the Great Lakes, and all the damage done to what was once a balanced system, how could you not view the Asian Carp as one of the worst menaces that would create total devastation to one of the greatest bodies of water in the world the Great Lakes. Anybody home?

Thirdly , I sincerely hope that these politicians can do the math with a trade off for ease of transportation, in relation to the massive amount of business that depends on the sport fishing industry around all the Great Lakes. That's not even to mention the domino effect to all the other businesses that benefit from sport fishing {boat manufacturers, motors, trailers ,fishing tackle companies, license fees , restaurants, gas stations...and on and on }Somebody tell me that" they" the politicians fully understand this !

Just what time does the White House open as I will absolutely be one of the first callers on Monday. Everyone needs to make these "guys' know just what a big deal we the citizens feel this Asian Carp mess is , and the time to do something about it was yesterday ! You think?

Ah but there in lies the problem , you'd have to think !

Well I called the White House on Feb. 8 2010 at 8:15am using the number in the previous posts, and after talking to the people who actually answer the phone I was swithed to a recording that said "Welcome to the White House comment line. Because of todays special event the comment line is closed".

I guess you can make whatever assumption you want out of the response I got.

I sure hope the meeting in Washington to discuss what to do about the Asian Carp problem is closed today also.

When they look at the lake, all they see is dollar signs which is what they'll get when they start selling off our water to other states. As far as they're concerned, the new mussles and the asian carp are just cleaning the water up nicely so it can sold for a higher price. And guess which state is already positioned to do this with a canal sucking billions of gallons per day out of lake MI?

Well Fox news reported that the White House meeting on the Asian Carp problem went on yesterday even though the White House "comment" line was closed yesterday to any comments.

They the "politicians " supposedly allocated 78.5 million to "control " the Asian Carp from getting into Lake Michigan via the locks entering the Lake down here by Chicago.

From what Fox reported theyre remedy includes a plan on erecting a third electric barrier. I wonder based on all the time it took to install and maintain the old electric barrier how many months, or years it will take them to complete it? Sure hope we don't have a power outage down here. No that never happens, and of course, they will have these barriers manned 24/7 just in case, with adequate personnel along with generators standing by . Right?

Another "solution " they plan is keeping the locks to Lake Michigan "closed most of the time" . Well that being said ,I sure hope the Asian Carp won't enter the Lakes "some of the time". No that couldn't be a possibility,could it?

How about simply closing the locks permanently by sealing off the locks from the lake totally so that there is "no chance" of Asian Carp entering the Great Lakes, through the locks "some of the time"

I think it"s obvious that "they" don't have a good plan we still need to call the White House., telling them we do not agree with their "plan".

I mean who knows, maybe the comment line will be open today !

Based on past experiences, just look at how well "they" controlled the Asian Carp in the Mississippi and it's tributaries !

What a relief to know that "they" have a "foolproof" plan to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes.

What were we all worrying about ?

I think this is a band-aid approach and will not work, so it's important to keep up the pressure to permanently seal off the locks. Don't let "them" wear you out. This "plan " leaves a lot to be desired!

Just was watching the news and yes they allocated 80 mil to "study" the problem and in the mean time the news story mentioned that the Illinois politicians were against closing the locks so as to not lose some jobs.


OK so lets see .
1. Use 80 million dollars to "study" the problem, and install electric barrier

2. Worry about some jobs in Illinois.
Maybe they could use some of the 80 million to retrain workers whose jobs would be lost. Just a thought

3. Disregard the impact of the Carp possibly getting into all the Great Lakes through the still open locks, and disrupting a billion dollar sport fishery.

4. Take the chance of further disrupting the ecological balance of some of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world in a negative way. Which by the way could never be reversed .

IDNR, USFWS to begin traditional searching near warm water discharges

CHICAGO - Fisheries biologists from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will begin intensive sampling operations in multiple locations within the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS) this week. The sampling efforts will include using commercial fishing nets and electro fishing gear in an attempt to locate either silver or bighead Asian carp above the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Electric Fish Barrier System. The sampling operation will also include the use of commercial fishermen and is scheduled to take place in the CAWS over the next 2-3 weeks.

Sampling crews will concentrate their efforts near warm water discharges created by various industrial operations along the waterway system. These areas of warm water serve as a place of congregation for fish during the winter when water temperatures drop significantly.

The sampling effort on the Chicago Area Waterway System is an important step in the Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework, which includes both short and long term actions to stop the migration of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.

(Media Note: There will be video and photo opportunities at one sampling location at The Stickney Water Reclamation Plant in Cicero on February 17 from 9:30-11 a.m. Reporters will be briefed on sampling activities at that time by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
